When it comes to choosing between the Leopard 45 and the Leopard 46, you’re not simply choosing between two sailing catamarans — you’re weighing two generations of a proven bluewater cruising platform, with the 46 representing a clear and substantial leap forward.

Both the 45 and 46 carry Leopard’s DNA: spacious and robust designs that deliver the best combination of interior volume and performance. These are boats built for comfort at sea and at anchor, with excellent air circulation, forward cockpits, and layouts that make life aboard easy and enjoyable.

The Leopard 45 has earned its reputation as a reliable, easy-to-maintain cruiser with clean lines, an open-plan saloon, and the ability to handle long passages with confidence. The new Leopard 46 not only builds on that legacy but surpasses it — offering more space, smarter layouts, upgraded materials, and advanced technology that make it the better boat for those who want the very best in modern cruising.

Design and Aesthetics of Sailing Catamarans

The Leopard 45’s design is timeless: practical, reliable, and popular with serious cruisers. Its forward door and cockpit, galley-forward layout, and excellent helm visibility make it comfortable and safe for any passage.

The Leopard 46 uses those core traits to create something sleeker and more contemporary. Wider walkways improve movement around the deck, whilst the integration between the aft cockpit and saloon has been completely reimagined. A new cockpit–saloon connection allows you to close up tight for protection at sea or open fully for a seamless, unified social space. The slightly forward helm on the Leopard 46 offers uninterrupted views, making both sailing and berthing less stressful and more enjoyable.

Sailing Performance and Handling

Both the 45 and 46 are robust bluewater catamarans capable of handling all wind conditions with confidence. Their stepped hulls and overlapping genoa rigs give them excellent performance under sail, and both come as standard with twin 45hp Yanmar diesel engines.

The Leopard 46 builds on the 45’s performance capabilities with a taller rig, upgraded running rigging, larger winches, and the option for Ullman performance sails or a square-top mainsail. You can also opt for 57hp Yanmar diesel engines or an advanced electric drive system: twin 25kW electric motors with powerful battery banks, a range-extending genset, and the ability to regenerate power whilst sailing.

The electric system is no mere novelty. Under electric power, the 46 can cruise quietly at 7.4 knots, with the generator boosting speed to 9.1 knots when required. Those speeds are comparable to the 46’s performance with the 45hp Yanmars.

Interior Comfort and Layout Flexibility

The Leopard 45’s interior is bright, airy, and functional, with a spacious owner’s suite and plenty of room for guests. The Leopard 46 takes that openness a step further, offering oversized panoramic glass windows (as opposed to acrylic) and additional skylights. Upgraded materials, upholstery options, indirect lighting, and overhead panels enhance the onboard atmosphere, evoking the feel of a well-appointed home.

The 46’s most luxurious configuration features three spacious cabins, including a large owner’s stateroom aft in the starboard hull with a dedicated companionway for privacy, plus a versatile utility room with cabinetry, washer/dryer, and worktop space. For larger crews, the layout can be adapted to offer up to five cabins — four double cabins with ensuite heads/showers plus a midship twin-bunk cabin ideal for children or a skipper.

The saloon features a smart rectangular table that folds down for coffee-table lounging or opens out for dining. In the aft cockpit, you can choose between a full-size rectangular table to create one expansive social zone with the saloon, or a more compact version for easy movement and smaller gatherings.

Amenities and Features

Whilst the Leopard 45 has all the essentials for comfortable cruising, the Leopard 46 is designed for extended liveaboard comfort. Highlights of the 46 include:

Dinghy Handling: Optional patented electric dinghy platform — maintenance-free and operable from inside the boat.

Outdoor Living: Forward seating near the helm, a built-in chaise longue in the aft cockpit, a forward cockpit for breezy relaxation, and an inviting upper lounge for elevated views and sundowner cocktails.

Indoor/Outdoor Connection: Stackable, retractable aft saloon door opens fully to create a seamless flow between the interior and aft cockpit, perfect for integrated entertaining.

Solar and Power: Space for four 400W solar panels, a standard 5,000W inverter for full air conditioning functionality, and the option for a full lithium battery bank.

Galley and Appliances: Larger galley with more worktop space, convection microwave as standard, and options for induction hob, dishwasher, washer/dryer, and watermaker.

Climate Control: New variable-speed, self-contained air conditioning units are quieter and more efficient.

Outdoor Cooking: Optional built-in plancha (a heated cooking plate) or electric grill accessible from the swimming platform.

Catamaran Construction and Yacht Maintenance

Both the 45 and 46 benefit from Leopard’s focus on ease of maintenance and robust build quality. The Leopard 46 features a “reverse” deck mould with improved support structures and upgraded glass saloon windows for durability and clarity. Built-in exterior cushions reduce clutter by eliminating the need for storage when not in use. Leopard has also introduced a new hull construction process called single-shot infusion, marking a significant shift in the company’s lamination strategy by replacing the traditional multi-stage infusion method with a streamlined, one-step approach.

Choosing Your Leopard

If you’re looking for a proven, seaworthy, comfortable and easy-to-maintain bluewater cruiser with an outstanding balance of interior space and performance, the Leopard 45 is always a wise choice.

If you want the next generation — a catamaran that blends Leopard’s legendary DNA with modern design, upgraded technology, and flexible living spaces — the Leopard 46 represents a true evolution. It’s built for those who want to go farther, stay longer, and enjoy the journey as much as the destination.
