Cruising the Pacific Northwest: A Leopard Owner’s Dream Journey

Meet Chad and Jenny, proud owners of a Leopard 45 catamaran. They’ve been sailing through the picturesque waters of the Pacific Northwest — a region that feels like home for Jenny and a grand adventure for them both. In this interview, they share their cruising experiences, favorite stops they’ve explored aboard their Leopard 45, Min Ö, and what makes this the perfect boat for discovering the stunning beauty of the Pacific Northwest.

Getting to Know the Boat

Chad and Jenny’s journey with their Leopard 45 began in March 2021. After navigating the complexities of the pandemic, which included dealing with quarantine restrictions and a last-minute rush to secure a transport spot, they finally took possession of the boat in July of that year. The boat traveled from South Africa to Grenada to Victoria, Canada, by way of the Panama Canal. Despite the challenges, including not being able to cross into Canada due to COVID, the couple tracked their boat’s journey with excitement, receiving updates from the crew with photos—one of which even showed the boat surfing at 20 knots!

Why the Pacific Northwest?

While Chad considered keeping the boat in San Diego, where their daughter lives, Jenny always had her sights set on the Pacific Northwest. “This is home. If I want to sail in the Med or Bahamas, I’ll charter. My own boat belongs here,” she says.

The couple also shares a unique bond with the area; Jenny grew up in the Pacific Northwest, and after years of traveling and living abroad, they both knew this region would be the perfect home base. Their Leopard 45 allows them to explore the coastal beauty of the area with flexibility and ease. With a double slip just eight minutes from their house, Chad and Jenny have a perfect setup. The ability to pop down to the marina and relax on board without even leaving the dock is a luxury they treasure. The couple loves to entertain friends and unwind aboard, making it a second home for them.

Two Months of Cruising

Their longest cruise to date has been an impressive two months, which has allowed them to explore the breathtaking beauty of the Pacific Northwest. For Jenny, cruising this area has been a dream come true, especially since the region is known for its natural beauty and temperate climate.

The couple enjoys sailing to some of the best-known spots in the region, making memories along the way. One of their must-visit spots is Princess Louisa Inlet. Although it requires a bit of time and effort to reach, the picturesque inlet is well worth it. As Chad says, “It’s a time commitment, which is why some people skip it, but with two months, we could really explore.”

The couple also name Pendrell Sound as a top memory, where they returned after falling in love with its peaceful atmosphere and warm waters perfect for swimming. And the list of favorites continues to grow! More recent destinations they’ve come to love include Deer Harbor, Sidney Harbor (B.C.), Sucia Island, Stuart Island, and Eastsound on Orcas Island.

Exploring On Foot and By Boat

While some of the destinations are best enjoyed by boat, there are plenty of opportunities to explore on foot, too. Jenny recalls an accidental six-mile hike that was supposed to be 1.7 miles—still, she says, it was a fun adventure.

Some of their other favorite stops include Walsh Cove and Toba Wilderness Marina, which offer a combination of beauty, peace, and social gatherings. Chad mentions the stunning fjords in the region— “The walls rise 1,500 to 2,000 feet straight up,” he says. The couple also enjoys the wildlife sightings, from seals and bald eagles to the occasional humpback whale.

Life on the Water

Life on board is made even more enjoyable thanks to their miniature golden retriever, Shrimpy. While Shrimpy gets nervous during rough conditions, she’s otherwise an adaptable and low-energy companion. “We usually take her ashore 3–4 times a day by paddleboard or kayak. She just hops on and off,” says Jenny. Shrimpy continues to love life aboard. Jenny shared that if they head to the car and say “off to Min Ö,” she jumps right in—unlike a trip to the vet!

In terms of cooking, the couple makes the most of their onboard space with a Breville tabletop oven and plenty of counter space for their coffee makers—“his and hers,” they laugh. They also upgraded the interior table to create a more open, living-room-like feel on board.

The couple loves to entertain, and they’ve found the Leopard 45’s salon and cockpit areas perfect for hosting friends. Jenny is quick to point out that the boat has a nice, social layout, which makes gatherings on board enjoyable and easy.

Future Plans and Staying Connected

While they plan to keep their boat in the Pacific Northwest, they’re open to exploring other destinations, especially with Starlink making it easier to work remotely while cruising. “We wouldn’t be able to stay up here for eight weeks if it weren’t for Starlink,” Chad explains.

As for Min Ö, she recently returned from some “spa time” at Port of Port Townsend, where she received fresh bottom paint and a few minor repairs. The adventures continue with another cruise already planned for mid-July.

A Word from the Owners

Chad and Jenny’s experience of cruising the Pacific Northwest is an inspiring one—full of adventure, scenic beauty, and memories made both on and off the boat. If you’re considering a similar journey, they recommend embracing the challenges of the region and finding joy in the slower pace. “We’re not experts—this is just our experience,” Jenny shares, emphasizing that cruising in the Pacific Northwest is as much about exploration and learning as it is about soaking in the beauty of nature.

Their advice to other Leopard owners? Don’t be afraid to make the boat your own and take the time to explore—whether it’s the iconic fjords of Pendrell Sound or the bustling social anchorage of Prideaux Haven. And, of course, they’re always happy to connect with other Leopard owners to share tips, advice, and the community spirit that makes Leopard cruising so special.
