The island is best known for its famous Pink Sand Beach, a three-mile stretch of shoreline whose soft pink hue has made it one of the most photographed beaches in the Caribbean. Long walks along the beach, especially in the early morning or late afternoon, are unforgettable.
Valentine’s Resort & Marina in Dunmore Town offers full-service dockage and amenities, while cruisers looking to save on marina fees can anchor at Fort Point Anchorage and dinghy ashore.
Beyond the beach, Harbour Island offers colorful streets, boutique shops, restaurants, and historic landmarks including St. John’s Anglican Church, the oldest religious foundation in the Bahamas, dating back to 1768.
Navigating Devil’s Backbone
One of the most famous navigational features in the Bahamas is Devil’s Backbone, a shallow reef system located off the northern tip of Eleuthera.
Depending on weather conditions and experience level, some cruisers choose to hire a local pilot to assist with navigating the route. Once through the area, you’ll discover excellent snorkeling opportunities and access to Preacher’s Cave, an important historical site accessible by dinghy and a short walk.
Just offshore, Spanish Wells makes an excellent stop for provisioning and local exploration. Located on St. George’s Cay, this charming settlement offers grocery stores, fuel, restaurants, and an authentic glimpse into everyday Bahamian life.
Spanish Wells is also an excellent jumping-off point before making your way farther south along Eleuthera.
Current Cut
From Spanish Wells, many cruisers eventually transit Current Cut, a narrow passage connecting the Atlantic Ocean and the shallower waters on Eleuthera’s western side.
Current Cut is known for powerful tidal currents that can exceed ten knots during peak flow. Careful planning and attention to tides are essential, but for many sailors it’s one of the most memorable passages in the Bahamas.
For adventurous visitors, the area is also popular for snorkeling and diving when conditions allow.
Glass Window Bridge and Queen’s Bath
Few places in the Bahamas offer a more dramatic contrast than Glass Window Bridge.
At this narrow stretch of land, the deep blue Atlantic Ocean sits immediately adjacent to the brilliant turquoise waters of the Bahama Banks. The separation between the two is incredibly narrow, creating one of the most photographed viewpoints in the country.
The views from the bridge are spectacular, but the surrounding area offers plenty to explore as well.
Just a short walk away lies Queen’s Bath, a series of naturally formed ocean-fed pools carved into the rock. During calm conditions, these crystal-clear pools provide one of the most unique swimming experiences in the Bahamas.
Nearby Gaulding Cay Beach is another worthwhile stop, offering easy beach access, excellent snorkeling, and a beautiful setting for a picnic.

Southbound Along Eleuthera
As you continue south, Eleuthera reveals a different side of its personality.
Gregory Town is known for its surfing culture and proximity to Surfer’s Beach, one of the premier surfing destinations in the Bahamas. Even if surfing isn’t your thing, the dramatic Atlantic-facing coastline is worth the visit. After a day exploring the area, stop by Elvina’s for local food, drinks, and live music.
Farther south, Rock Sound offers several good anchorages and access to one of Eleuthera’s most fascinating natural attractions: Ocean Hole.
This inland saltwater swimming hole supports tropical fish and marine life despite being disconnected from the surrounding ocean. Its true depth remains unknown, adding to the mystery and appeal that have attracted visitors for generations.
Lighthouse Beach
At the southern tip of Eleuthera lies one of the most beautiful destinations in the entire Bahamas.
Lighthouse Beach combines powder-soft sand, dramatic limestone cliffs, impressive rock formations, and excellent snorkeling. The scenery feels untouched and remote, rewarding boaters who take the time to venture this far south.
