One of the biggest advantages of cruising the Abacos is the protected cruising found within the Sea of Abaco.
Unlike some Bahamas destinations that require longer offshore passages, the Abacos allow sailors to move comfortably between islands with relatively short daily runs. The shallow waters, abundant anchorages, and line-of-sight navigation make this region particularly attractive for cruising catamarans and sailors exploring the Bahamas for the first time.

Visitors should also make time for the famous Tranquil Turtle Beach Bar, which remains one of the most popular gathering spots in the northern Abacos.
No Name Cay and the Famous Swimming Pigs
The Exumas may get most of the attention when it comes to swimming pigs, but cruisers in the Abacos have their own version of this famous Bahamian experience.
No Name Cay is home to a group of swimming pigs that regularly greet arriving dinghies and visitors.
For many cruising families, this stop quickly becomes one of the highlights of the entire Abacos itinerary. Between the clear water, beautiful beaches, and memorable wildlife encounters, it offers a uniquely Bahamian experience that appeals to visitors of all ages.
Treasure Cay and Great Guana Cay
As you continue south, two of the most popular destinations in the region are Treasure Cay and Great Guana Cay.
Treasure Cay is famous for its spectacular beach, often ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the Bahamas. The wide stretch of white sand and brilliant turquoise water create a postcard-perfect setting that attracts both cruisers and resort visitors.
Great Guana Cay offers a different atmosphere.
Known for its laid-back cruising culture, beautiful beaches, and lively beach bars, it remains a favorite stop for boaters exploring the Sea of Abaco. Nipper’s Beach Bar has long been one of the most recognizable landmarks on the island and is often considered a must-visit stop for first-time visitors.
Marsh Harbour and Hope Town
For many cruisers, Marsh Harbour serves as the logistical hub of the Abacos.
The town provides easy access to provisioning, marine supplies, restaurants, transportation, and an airport. Whether you need groceries, replacement boat parts, or arriving guests, Marsh Harbour is often the most convenient place to make arrangements.
Just a short sail away lies one of the most iconic destinations in all of the Bahamas: Hope Town.
Located on Elbow Cay, Hope Town is famous for its candy-striped lighthouse, colorful colonial architecture, and protected harbor filled with cruising yachts. The settlement is easily explored by foot, bicycle, or golf cart and retains much of the charm that has made it a favorite among sailors for decades.
Visitors should also make time for Tahiti Beach at the southern end of Elbow Cay. At low tide, beautiful sandbars emerge from the crystal-clear water, creating one of the most photographed locations in the Abacos.
Snorkeling, Diving, and Natural Beauty
The Abacos offer no shortage of opportunities for underwater exploration.
Water Cay is a favorite snorkeling stop thanks to its wreck sites and marine life. Cruisers traveling with kayaks or paddleboards often spend hours exploring the surrounding waters.
Further south, Pelican Cays Land & Sea Park protects one of the most impressive reef systems in the region. The park’s healthy coral reefs attract divers and snorkelers alike, offering excellent visibility and abundant marine life.
Little Harbour is another must-visit destination. In addition to nearby reefs and caves, visitors can explore a thriving local arts community that has made the settlement famous throughout the Bahamas.
